Where did your interest in GCSE tutoring begin?

As a teacher, it became apparent that some students were "falling through the net" through no fault if their own. These students had their own unique talents and interests to offer, but were experiencing barriers to their learning. I knew that with individually tailored and supportive teaching, these children would be able to, not only overcome these barriers, but could also unlock their potential to thrive! This would enable them to gain those all-important qualifications which would give them access to the next steps of their journey!

What was it about your teaching subject that led you to online GCSE tutoring?

1-1 online tutoring offers a safe space for a student to share ideas and ask questions openly without fear of being "judged". It offers the tutor the time and space to focus on the individual needs of that student, and tailor the teaching input accordingly.

When choosing a tutor for GCSE, what qualities should a good tutor have?

The ability to see the "whole" student; their personal strengths and preferred learning styles, as well as their areas of struggle. The ability to listen and to communicate effectively is key. Patience, empathy and kindness are essential.

How beneficial can a private tutor be when studying for GCSE?

A good tutor will build confidence, as well as ability, to ensure learning progress. The student will learn more than just how to pass an exam. They will take with them a life-long love of learning and sense of self-value

What support do you provide as a GCSE Tutor?

▪︎An introductory "meet and greet" session; finding a little information about a student's strengths, talents and interests which I use as themes for the lesson. ▪︎Observation, discussion and assessment; to identify how the student best engages with learning, and offer a shared / supported activity based on their preferred learning style. ▪︎Build confidence and progression through positive interaction and feedback; ensuring a secure foundation of skills. ▪︎Demonstrate how skills can be used in real-life situations and then applied to problem-solve in different contexts. ▪︎Offer enjoyable and engaging activities; no two lessons are ever the same! (Eg. Some students enjoy applying their skills to puzzles and quizes; some prefer timed challenges; some prefer more creative expressions of their ideas.) ▪︎Always believe that everyone has a learning potential which a good tutor should be able to unlock!
