Where did your interest in GCSE tutoring begin?

I have done face to face tutoring, in addition to my traditional classroom role, for almost my entire career. The focus in these sessions has been varied; from guiding and supporting students in their exam preparation, through to teaching English to speakers of other languages. More recently, the Covid 19 lockdown led me to focus my efforts more specifically in the area of online tutoring, with individuals and small groups. I haven’t looked back and this is now my primary role.

What was it about your teaching subject that led you to online GCSE tutoring?

I have been a GCSE English examiner (Edexcel and AQA) for more than 10 years, giving me an acute understanding of what a successful GCSE exam performance requires. I also have excellent subject knowledge but I am, above all, passionate about the subject of English, both Language and Literature. Online tutoring affords me an opportunity to explore all aspects of the GCSE course, using varied resources which can be tailored to the individual’s needs and interests.

When choosing a tutor for GCSE, what qualities should a good tutor have?

Teaching and learning is a collaborative process in any circumstance so, the qualities of a good tutor are, to a great extent, those of a good teacher: someone with a strong knowledge of and love for their subject, who is organised and yet flexible, who is firm yet supportive and who communicates clearly and listens closely.

How beneficial can a private tutor be when studying for GCSE?

The benefits of private tutoring are undeniable. Students have an opportunity to take part in bespoke GCSE learning/revision sessions, allowing them to focus on areas of the course or specific skills that they feel a need to revise or review, without the pressure of having to ‘keep up’ with the rest of the class.

What support do you provide as a GCSE Tutor?

As a tutor I consider myself part of the student’s GCSE team. The support I provide comes out of a wealth of teaching experience and a genuine desire to see young people realise their own potential, at GCSE and beyond.
