About Martin

I have all the enthusiasm of a new entrant to the teaching profession with a lifetime’s experience. I have taught Mathematics throughout my teaching career at all levels up to first year undergraduate. My degree equipped me to teach both Physics and Biology at GCSE, ‘A’ Level and equivalent Level Three. Coupled with that I have taught in secondary schools, colleges and university. I am successfully tutoring all the sciences and mathematics at GCSE Level.

For me, tuition is a partnership between tutor and student, a relationship that has one all important objective – the needs of the student. This means tailored resources and tailored strategies for the individual – all delivered with good humour. Add to this a wealth of experience and resources for effective revision practice and examination success which are applicable to any subject.

I have all the enthusiasm of a new entrant to the teaching profession with a lifetime’s experience.

Find out more about Martin

Where did your interest in GCSE tutoring begin?

During the first covid lockdown it became apparent that my MS precluded a return to supply work, so an alternative way of teaching was required.

What was it about your teaching subject that led you to online GCSE tutoring?

I may have retired but I remain passionate about teaching - the subject, be it mathematics or any of the sciences is of less importance.

When choosing a tutor for GCSE, what qualities should a good tutor have?

Of prime importance is listening to the student, to discover exactly what they understand of a particular topic. Secondly, giving the space and encouragement for the student to explore their own ideas and test them out working with the tutor. I am a firm advocate of constructivism, that a learner has to literally build and extend their understanding, linking new knowledge to existing ideas in a logical, meaningful way. The tutor should be patient and always praise the efforts of the student.

How beneficial can a private tutor be when studying for GCSE?

A private tutor can potentially improve a student grade by at least two divisions. The benefit of boosting a student's confidence in their abilities and self-esteem is incalculable, not only in terms of examination success, but also in terms of their 'mental stamina' and self belief that they can excel themselves.

What support do you provide as a GCSE Tutor?

My students receive annotated copies of any PowerPoints used and notes made during tutorial sessions. In addition, copies of reference materials for revision techniques and examination technique are also provided. Where appropriate, limited additional work is given to the student which is marked and annotated for returning quickly to the student.
